Formula off Road unlimited "Mad Climber"
« : 28 Joulukuu, 2009, 09:59:09 »
Hi,

I'm Leo Groeneveld, age 37, from the Netherlands. 2 years ago I have built my Formula Off Road unlimited car "Mad Climber" based on a Kyosho Mad Force.
As I'm always having trouble with nitro engines I have decided to get rid of them and rebuild the car to electric. I have also shortened the car for better steering. I'm still waiting for the new chassis plates to arrive but they have been shipped. Someone I know from another forum has made them for me to my specification.

I was infected with the FOR virus after seeing them on Eurosport and I had to have a car like that. Only problem is I can't do anything with it because everything over here is flat.

I made the connecters  for the chassis and the roll cage myself. The bearing block was made by a machine factory and the body parts were made in Shanghai from solid ABS after I sent the part files to a factory.

First four are pics of the car I used for reference.

Here the model with a B4 buggy so you can compare sizes.

4 wheel steering.

Technical details:

Bottom with 4 wheel steering mechanism

Donor car   : Kyosho Mad Force
Transmission   : Kyosho Twin Force (after rebuild)
ESC      : None at the moment
Motor      : None at the moment
Battery      : None at the moment
Rims      : Kyosho Mad Force
Tires      : Pro-Line paddle tires
Remote      : Traxxas TQ2 27MHz

car before rebuild:

I love this car but it has become way too expensive. Had I known it would be that expensive I would never have started the build but on the other hand it's something I wanted to do once in my life. I hope to use it in the future but for now it will only be pretty on a shelf.

I will be building a Class 1 unlimited (baja) buggy now and use my Traxxas Slash as the donor car.
I have to decide whether to buy a TIG welding machine (expensive) to be able to make a 3mm steel rod chassis or braze the chassis from brass pipes (I already have the tools to brazing). I'm fairly good at brazing but I have never tried to TIG weld.

Very, very nice build!!  :o Reminds me a lot of my uncle's Free Willys:

You should come to Finland or Norway next year to show off that in the hills!

Yesterday I received the new chassis plates, today I started rebuilding the car.

After I finish it it will sit on a cabinet because I don't have a motor and ESC for this car. My full scale car broke down and had to be replaced so it will take a while to get over that. I would love to compete in Finland but I will have to find a sponsor first.

I have finished the chassis today

I had to make 3 holes to mount the battery box

I had to make a clearance in the bearing block and fitted it to the chassis finishing the drive train

The car looks like it has the right proportions now, tomorrow I hope to finish the body parts and it will be ready besides the setup.

Have a happy new year!

Finished te FOR.

Chopped the body parts to fit.

When I have a BL setup I have to test the weight distribution and maybe add some weight in the front of the car.

I would like to make a template to form PC body parts. For now it's done.
